【The painted casket that is my father’s memorial】

When I heard of my father’s death
It was a boiling hot day

I did not know how he died
Because I was living far away from Tokyo
The news reminded me of the days with my father

When I was young and he treated me with affection.
However, when I was in my teens we did not exchange

many words,

When he became old he did not recognize me
He asked me, "Who are you?"
With eyes that did not focus on me.

"I had a daughter,
She was bright and active…”

He had an image of me as a five-year old girl
No wonder he could not recognize me as an adult.

The daughter who was forgotten by her father
Left Tokyo to live in a foreign country

I did not have an opportunity so say "Good-bye,"
Therefore, I created a painted casket for him

and put it in my heart

I drew his favorite flowers
And I scattered sparkles of mourning

The empty wooden painted casket will continue within me
As my father’s memorial forever
